Reflecting upon their participation in Christian Base Communities (CBC) during the early 1970s, peasants offer up their testimonies. La Palabra En El Bosque (The Word in the Woods) reveals how the CBCs grew, eventually involving about one third of the northern Morazán population, one of the most impoverished regions of El Salvador. By 1980, state repression drives many to join the ranks of the guerrilla movement.
This documentary puts a spotlight on the “utopian” features of CBC such as communal labor and social equality and less on the guerrilla movement. The film also shows the non-linear paths by which people joined the revolutionary struggle.
Come see this film in September and watch as the protagonists of the stories ponder the struggles and complexities of current reality.
